The group

The cultural association "Gergent" together with its folk group began its activity with the purpose to make the precious patrimony of sicilian popular tradition relive giving a particular attention to the one of Agrigento.

The group, composed by young students and workers, expresses through the stage representation both the dreaming sadness and the joy of singing living and dancing of the sicilian people.

Songs and music bear from an attentive and deep research, they represent particular moments of the workday of the farmer, the carter and the fisherman during their moments of joke, playtime and love.

The group participating to important international festival has always showed great interpretative skills receiving unanimous positive criticism everywhere appearing at the same time as the messenger of the sicilian popular tradition.

Small Orchestra

Friscalettu :Breath tool of greek origin made up of mediterranean reed. It's the typical shepherd's whistle, the mouth has a beak form and there are some holes to play it. It reflects the agricultural pastoral culture.

Tamburo : It belongs to the percussion family and it's made up of a wood circle surrounded by brass saucers and with an ass skin in the middle.

Bummulu : It's an amphora and its sound reproduces the immission of breath inside it. The word has greek origins but the untypical instrument was used to contain water and wine.

Tamburo bipelle : This particular kind of tambourine has two skins, wood made with tension strings. Its origins are tunisian.

Marranzano : Used during the freetime, this instrument musically symbolizes Sicily.

In addition to these instruments, the musicians play accordion and guitars.

THE GROUP HAS ABOUT TEN COUPLES OF DANCERS

GIRLS COSTUME: The style is of the 19th century : brocade skirt ; smooth velvet bodice ; white skirt ; big underpants ; apron ; handmade wool dark mantle ; tambourine.

MEN COSTUME : It represents the way of dressing of carters at the end of 19th century : pants, velvet brown gilet ; red wool band and work handkerchief.
